In a letter sent to the US Congress, Apple told Senators Ken Buck and Mike Lee that Parler had proposed sufficient improvements in policing its service to be approved once again. The smartphone giant said it stood by its decision to ban Parler on January 8 for repeated and “egregious” violations of its rules requiring apps to set up systems to remove “offensive content”. Apple, Amazon and Google all banned the app from their respective app stores and infrastructure services in January after the storming of the US Capitol, whose perpetrators often used Parler and in some cases live streamed their intrusion on the service. Apple said that its decision had not been coordinated with the other companies in any way. According to CNN, the smartphone giant wrote back to Senators Mike Lee and Ken Buck telling them that the troubled social network “has proposed updates to its app and the app’s content moderation practices” sufficient to comply with its rules. Apple originally banned Parler in January in the wake of the storming of the US Capitol , many of whose perpetrators were heavy users. It is hoped that Ingenuity can pave the way for future flyers that transform our exploration of celestial bodies because they can reach areas that rovers can’t go, and travel much faster. “We don’t know exactly where Ingenuity will lead us, but today’s results indicate the sky – at least on Mars – may not be the limit,” said acting Nasa administrator Steve Jurczyk. The flight was challenging because of conditions vastly different from Earth’s – an atmosphere that has less than one percent the density of our own, and gravitational pull of only a third. So this is not the usual altitude for helicopters to fly on Earth, with the altitude record held at about 12.4km. It has to be ultra-light and rotate the rotas extremely fast. To add to this, it has to also fly autonomously as we are far too far away on Earth to control it directly. “The brief flight of less than a minute showed Ingenuity worked and NASA can now slowly extend on its operation. The technology tested in this Mars copter could allow additional support to survey the terrain for rovers and humans alike in the future. It could also access difficult to access cliffs that cannot be reached by rovers. Ingenuity had initially been feeding off the Perseverance’s power system but then had to start using its own battery to run a vital heater, which would protect its unshielded electrical components from freezing and cracking during the bitter Martian night. 12:29PM Why flying on Mars is a big deal Since the Apollo missions introduced rovers to the moon’s surface, surface exploration has remained at ground-level. Over time, drone flights could allow exploration of inaccessible, rocky terrain or to scan cliffs and other geological features too treacherous for a rover—or humans. Nasa began concept testing its off-world aviation experiment back in 2014, and has conducted extensive vacuum chamber-testing to understand the complexity of flight on Mars, where it’s a bit chilly by terrestrial standards, dipping to -130F (-90C) at night. But Ingenuity is only the beginning. The agency’s Dragonfly mission to Saturn’s moon Titan is scheduled for a 2027 launch, with arrival about eight years later. The larger rotorcraft will fly more than 100 miles on the icy moon, collecting samples at multiple locations. While Titan’s nitrogen-heavy, complex atmosphere will be an easier place to fly than Mars when it comes to aerodynamics, methane rain and super extreme cold of -290F (-179C) will present their own challenges. Ingenuity and its progeny must be largely autonomous given the lag in communications from Earth, which is 180 million miles away.
